Transpacific Technologies Inc. (TTI), a Los Angeles based engineering firm, teamed with Universities Space Research Association (USRA) to support NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) contract.

USRA, headquartered in Columbia, Maryland, was recently awarded the SOFIA contract by NASA, and it will provide science and mission operations support. TTI will support the SOFIA contract in multiple tasks such as engineering support, risk management, safety, and configuration management.

The SOFIA contract consists of a modified Boeing 747SP aircraft and is considered the largest airborne astronomical observatory featuring a far-infrared telescope mounted in the rear fuselage. The contract is an 80/20 partnership of NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR)
